Viking Raid

A weekend of Anglo-saxon encampment with activities from the period and occasional raids by vikings! The Friends of St Nicholas contribution to the millennium celebrations of King Canute’s gift is the re-enactment of a Viking raid on a Saxon village. Over this weekend, you will discover that 30-40 Saxons have encamped on the land to the east of the Tithe Barn, where you will be able to visit their village, chat to the inhabitants, investigate their tools and weapons and discuss the way of village life 1,000 years ago. But beware! The Vikings are coming. Twice a day on both days over the weeknd, the Saxon village will be raided by invading Vikings and battle will ensue. Great entertainment for every generation of visitor – grandparents, parents, children. Our grateful thanks to the Ilchester Estate for allowing the use of their land and to Mrs. Lucy Morrison for vacating her paddock for the weekend.A weekend of Anglo-saxon encampment with activities from the period and occasional raids by vikings!
